Eyes are the vital organ of our body. If the world looks beautiful, then our eyesight plays an important role.

Out of the five senses, smell, touch, vision, taste, and hearing, vision is the most important one as it contributes to the 80% of our senses. In 21 st century, people are suffering from poor eyesight at an early age only.

What are the factors affecting your eyesight?

Diet, daily routine, daily habits, environment, carefree attitude.

So, here are 14 tips that would help us to maintain healthy eyes

Our body is a machine that derives its energy from the food we consume. The body needs vitamins, proteins, and other nutrients to function. If there is a lack of nutrients in our body, various body organs would be affected with age and especially the eyes. Vitamin A, C, B6, B9, B12, omega 3 fatty acids are very important for our vision.

Foods that are rich in Vitamin A, C, B6, B9, B12, omega 3 fatty acids:

  • Pumpkin, sweet potato, carrots, green leafy vegetables, cod liver oil, milk, fish are the rich source of Vitamin A.
  • Oranges, broccoli, pineapple, brussels sprouts, papaya, citrus fruits are rich in Vitamin C.
  • Legumes, nuts, seeds, legumes, eggs are the source of Vitamin B6.
  • Asparagus, eggs, broccoli, legumes, green vegetables have a good amount of Vitamin B9.
  • Flax seeds, chia seeds, walnuts, roasted soybeans provide omega 3 fatty acids.

Due to the increase in global warming, there is depletion of the ozone layer, which leads to an increase in ultraviolet rays (UV rays) reaching the earth.

These UV rays are harmful to the body, especially for the skin and eyes. If you are exposed to UV rays for a longer duration of time, it can cause degeneration, pterygia, cataracts which can lead to the temporary loss of eyesight.

Steps to avoid UV rays:

  • Wear Sunglasses whenever you are out in the sun for the longer duration of time.
  • Use contact lenses which block UV rays.

  • Using UV rays protected glasses while working on computer/laptop screen for the longer duration.
  • Maintain proper body posture while working on the laptop.
  • Use comfortable furniture that supports your body posture while working.
  • Use eye drops to moisturize the eyes.
  • If itchiness, dryness or pain persist consult the doctor.

5. Perform various exercises to improve eyesight

There are numerous exercises which help to improve the eyesight.

These are:

1. Palming exercise

  • Rub your palms strenuously.
  • Due to strenuously rubbing, friction is created within your hands and you can feel warmth in your palms.
  • Now place your palms over your eyes until there is warmth effect.
  • You can feel that your eye muscle is relaxed.
  • Repeat 3-4 times.

2. Blinking your eyes

  • Sit down on your chair, 20 ft away from the wall and relax your shoulders.
  • Look at any corner of the room.
  • Now continuously blink your eyes 20 times.
  • After blinking is done, close the eyes and relax for 20-30 seconds.
  • Repeat this exercise 5 times.

  • Sit down on your chair and relax your shoulders.
  • Hold a pen/pencil in your hand and place it in front of your nose, in between the two eyes.
  • Look at the tip of the pen/pencil
  • Now bring the pen/pencil closer. Hold it for five seconds.
  • Now move it far away from the body. Hold it for five seconds
  • Repeat the exercise 10-15 times.

4. Massaging the eyes

  • Sit down on your chair and relax your shoulders.
  • Close your eyes and tilt your head backward.
  • Use your index and middle fingers to massage your eyes in the clockwise direction for 15 seconds.
  • Now massage your eyes in the anticlockwise direction for 15 seconds.
  • Repeat the exercise for 10-15 times.

5. Rolling your eyes

  • Sit down on your chair and relax your shoulders, keep your face straight.
  • Now starts rolling your eyeballs left and right without moving your neck till 15 seconds.
  • Now roll your eyeballs upwards and downwards without moving your neck for another 15 seconds.
  • Repeat this exercise 10-15 times.

6. Making an eight

  • Try to make an eight on a wall with the help of your eyes without moving your neck.
  • Repeat this exercise 10 times.

7. Focussing on thumb

  • Sit down on your chair, at a distance of 6 feet from the window and relax your shoulders, keep your face straight.
  • Put out your right arm in front of you, take out your thumb and focus at the tip of the thumb for 4 seconds.
  • Now shift the focus to the window for 4 seconds.
  • Repeat this exercise for one or two minutes.

8. Glancing exercise

  • Keep your face straight, inhale and exhale.
  • Try to glance towards your left side as left as you can and keep looking left for 5 seconds.
  • After five seconds, look straight for 3 seconds by slowly moving your eyeballs.
  • Now try to glance towards right side as right as you can and keep looking right till 5 seconds.
  • Do it for 10-15 times.

9. Pressing the eyes

  • Sit down on your chair and relax your shoulders.
  • Close your eyes, inhale and exhale.
  • Now gently press your both eyelid with your index finger for 15 seconds.
  • After 4 seconds repeat the above steps again.
  • Repeat the exercise for 5-10 times.

10. Writing the text

  • Sit on a chair, at a distance of 10 feet from the wall.
  • Now imagine that you are writing the text with your eyes i.e move your eyeballs as you are writing on the wall with the help of your eyes.
  • Write for 20-30 seconds.
  • Take rest for 10 seconds
  • Now perform it 5 times.

6. Family history could be a reason for weak eyesight

If someone in your family is suffering or had ailments like diabetes then you are at higher risk of getting the same disease. Similarly, if a person had or has eye disease in your family then there are high chances of catching that disease.

Protective measures:

  • Consult a doctor regarding family history and eyesight ailments.
  • Have regular eye checkup.
  • Have a regular eyesight test to avoid any disease.

7. Don’t rub the eyes

If you have a habit of rubbing the eyes continuously, then please stop for the sake of your vision.

There are germs present all over your hands, and when they come in contact with the eyes, these germs can lead to various infections.

In place of getting any eye infection, it’s better not to rub your eyes.

If you can’t leave rubbing your eyes than clean your hands with proper sanitizer or soap, to avoid any eye infection.

Steps to prevent eye infection caused due to makeup:

  • Get your mascara changed after every three months to avoid any infection
  • Use pencil liners should be sharped regularly
  • Use kajal occasionally, as it contains lots of chemicals which is harmful to the eyes.
  • Don’t share your foundation applying sponge with anyone.

9. Use your contact lenses properly

Contact lenses users should be very cautious while using your contact lenses as you guys are more prone to eye infections. Due to misuse of contact lenses dry eyes, blurry vision, burning of eyes, unusual secretions can occur.

Protective measures:

  • Always clean your hands when you are wearing contact lenses.
  • Avoid use of contact lenses for 24 hours.
  • Get your pair of contact lens replaced after every two or three months.
  • You should not reuse the contact lens solution.
